Intelligence and quality through IoT
Published: 3.2.2020
The Internet of Things brings about substantial potential for improving the quality of building.
Various sensor solutions designed for use in construction allow conditions in buildings, such as temperature and humidity, to be measured both during construction and for years after commissioning. The data is transmitted wirelessly via an IoT network based on Digita’s LoRaWAN technology to the desired network servers. The advantages of LoRaWAN technology include a reliable connection, long-range transmission and low energy consumption. This is an integral part of quality assurance and serves to improve the reliability of the constructor.
In addition, the sensors provide new monitoring opportunities that enhance the efficiency of large-scale construction sites. Where in the past, conditions had to be monitored by means of manual measurements, the data can now be collected in real time. At the same time, resources are freed up for other tasks.
The MATOlog sensor solution also utilises the Digita LoRaWAN network. Mato Engineering Oy offers a range of sensor solutions for consumers and the construction industry by utilising the Digita IoT LoRaWAN data transmission network. The sensors allow data to be obtained for use without delay, and both measurement and reporting takes place in real time. The solution saves time, reduces the likelihood of errors, improves transparency and helps ensure compliance with legislation and building codes.
Below you can find information on the MATOlog sensors MATOlog HOME and MATOlog CURE.
MATOlog HOME = sensor + mould growth model
Dynamic mould growth model
The dynamic mould growth model by MATOlog is the first IoT product in the world to take into account changing environmental conditions in the assessment of mould risk. The model has been developed from the Finnish mould growth model co-created by VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and Tampere University of Technology, which predicts mould growth in static conditions. In turn, the MATOlog mould growth model applies this to practical conditions. The service can be used to monitor the mould risk of structures and facilities cost-effectively, both during and after construction.
MATOlog CURE = sensor + maturity model
3-in-1 concrete sensor
The MATOlog Cure concrete sensor is used to monitor the curing and drying of concrete and subsequent exposure to water. The concrete maturity model implemented as a cloud service can be used to assess the progression of concrete strength and optimise the time of dismantling the mould after casting and monitor the casting temperature in order to prevent cracking or freezing. The service will also notify once the concrete is sufficiently dry to be coated.
After construction, the sensor also warns of possible water damage. The sensor is placed in the cast and contains no protruding parts that could interfere with further construction. The innovative solution can transmit data from a depth of around one metre, previously impossible by means of radio equipment. The sensor has undergone extensive testing at the Helsinki Olympic Stadium and HSY Hiekkaharju water tower construction sites, as well as in bridge construction and renovations of mould-infested schools.
