A channel numbering change will be made in the terrestrial TV network on November 19, 2024 – after the change, a channel search may be needed in terrestrial TV households

As part of the HD transition, Digita will carry out a channel numbering change on its nationwide terrestrial TV network between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Tuesday, November 19, 2024. During the work, there will be interruptions in TV broadcasts throughout Finland. The channels in multiplex E will experience interruptions of 10–30 minutes in duration, while interruptions on other multiplexes will be shorter. After the changes, terrestrial TV households may need to perform a channel search again. In the cable TV network, the corresponding channel numbering change has already been made in August 2021.
Finland is undergoing an HD transition, which means that after a phased transition, free TV broadcasts will be broadcast in HD quality only. Standard definition broadcasts will end first on Yle on March 31, 2025, and on other Finnish TV channels on June 30, 2025. The change affects both terrestrial and cable TV reception. The channel numbering change now effected applies to the terrestrial TV network.
“A channel number change in the terrestrial TV network means that the channel positions of the channels will change. After the update, the high-definition or HD versions of free-to-view TV channels will be listed first in the list of channels under numbers 1 to 20. Standard definition channels will be moved to channel numbers 21 to 39. All TV channels will continue in the portfolio,” says Tom Jungell, Senior Vice President, Broadcast, at Digita.
“After the changes, terrestrial TV households may need to perform a channel search again. Most TV receivers will automatically perform the channel search. We will inform you through our own channels and send out a press release when the changes have ended and a channel search can be done,” Jungell adds.
HD channels on channel positions 1–20 require an HD-capable TV receiver. If the HD channels do not appear, it is a good idea in joint-antenna households to check with the property manager first to ensure that the facility’s antenna system can receive HD broadcasts. If the antenna system is OK, a new HD-capable TV or digital tuner should be purchased. Almost all new TVs sold in Finland have an HD tuner. Performing a Channel Search
Most TV receivers will automatically retrieve the channels. If the channels need to be searched manually, the user should start a TV channel search. Some receivers may require a factory reset before performing a channel search. For instructions on the channel search, refer to the device’s user guide or digita.fi .
