Press release 25th June

Nelonen Media’s Ruutu service can
also be viewed using terrestrial televisions as of Wednesday 24 June. In
addition, a new functionality will be added in connection with the television
content that will offer viewers the option to start an ongoing programme from
the beginning. The service functions in Digita’s terrestrial television network
on Nelonen Media’s channels Nelonen, Jim, Liv and Hero.

“You can restart a current
programme by pressing one button on the remote control when you have the Ruutu
application in a smart television and you can access other free-of-charge
online content in the Ruutu service. For a viewer, this means an extensive
increase in content supply and the opportunity to watch a favourite programme
at a suitable time on television. In addition, there is a new functionality
that will allow the viewer to restart a programme and watch other episodes of
the same series,” says Senior Vice President, Online Kai Taka-aho at Nelonen Media.

“Bringing online content to
television broadcasts is a natural part of changes in watching television.
Recording set-top boxes and VOD libraries have already increased viewers’
choices, and viewing habits have become more versatile. Viewing online content
on television enables a more personal viewing experience,” says Teppo Ahonen, Director, Video Platform
Solutions at Digita.

The Ruutu service is a pilot
project implemented in cooperation by Nelonen Media, Digita and Sofia Digital.
The service is developed based on user feedback.

“There is an increasing demand for
the distribution of online content as people wish to watch television in
various kinds of situations and using various terminal devices. However, it is
clearly evident that viewers wish to watch online content on a big screen and
in a living room. Hybrid TV is a promising technology and standard for
delivering online TV services through a single application to almost all
manufacturers’ televisions,” says Kai Taka-aho.

A smart TV with a broadband connection is required for viewing
Ruutu content

During the ongoing test pilot, the
application is freely available to viewers.

Viewing online content requires a
fairly new smart TV and a broadband connection. In the pilot phase, the service
is available for almost all smart televisions sold in Finland and specific
television models sold in 2013 and 2014. A list of receiver sets is available
online at www.digita.fi/hybriditv.

Red button on the remote control

The key to viewing online content on
a terrestrial TV is to use the Red button on the remote control that appears on
the screen when you are viewing Nelonen Media’s television channels. You can
restart the current programme and open the Ruutu service menu by pressing the
Red button. The Red button icon is only visible in those televisions in which
the Hybrid TV feature has been activated and which have a broadband connection.
Instructions on activating the feature are available at: www.digita.fi/hybriditv.
