Osuuskunta Valkeavesi digitalizes its water supply services with Digita’s IoT network

HELSINKI 14, January 2025 - The Osuuskunta Valkeavesi water supply cooperative and Digita started a collaboration on the digitalization of water supply in 2022. In this undertaking, Osuuskunta Valkeavesi operating in Kalajoki area will gradually replace its approximately 6,000 water meters with remote-readable ones and enable real-time monitoring of water consumption across its extensive operating range.

The goal is to replace all current meters with remote-readable ones by 2034. The digitalization project relies on a nationwide IoT network based on Digita’s LoRaWAN technology.

Osuuskunta Valkeavesi, one of Finland’s largest cooperative-based water supply utilities, has also implemented the OmaVesi service, a cloud-based add-on for remote-readable water meters. It provides water utilities with a platform for monitoring water consumption, water balances in the distribution system, leaks, and alarms, as well as transmitting meter readings directly to invoicing.

“With digitalization, we want to improve our customer experience and the efficiency of our water services. Real-time access to information about water consumption helps not only our customers. It also helps us detect and fix any leaks faster. This allows us to reduce water loss and improve operational reliability,” says Annukka Takalo, CEO of Osuuskunta Valkeavesi.

“LoRaWAN technology is ideal for our geographically extensive operating range. It allows us to implement data transfer reliably and cost-effectively, even in sparsely populated areas where the coverage of mobile networks is not always sufficient,” Takalo comments on the technology choice.

“The collaboration with Digita has worked very well. Their technology and expertise have supported us significantly at the different stages of our digital transformation initiative.”

“We are very pleased to work with Osuuskunta Valkeavesi, a pioneering operator in its area. Together, we will realize the benefits of digitalization in the Osuuskunta Valkeavesi operating area,” says Mona Miettinen, Sales Manager for Digita’s IoT business.
